When you apply for a new PAN or a correction online on the Protean (formerly NSDL) portal and choose to upload scanned images, the photograph and signature must follow a fixed specification. Protean's instructions for Form 49A list: photograph 3.5 cm (height) × 2.5 cm (width), colour, 200 DPI, JPEG, maximum 20 KB; signature 2 cm (height) × 4.5 cm (width), 200 DPI, JPEG, maximum 10 KB; and supporting documents in PDF/A or JPEG up to 300 KB per page.
Some other Protean application pages state a maximum of 50 KB for the photo and signature with a DPI lower than 200. The tool above stays under 20 KB for the photo and 10 KB for the signature, which fits both versions. It also writes 200 DPI into the file, so 197 × 276 px reads as 2.5 × 3.5 cm and 354 × 157 px as 4.5 × 2 cm.
If you apply with Aadhaar-based e-KYC, your photo is usually taken from Aadhaar and you may not need to upload one. If you apply through UTIITSL, check the size shown on its upload page, as its limits can differ.
How to resize your PAN card photo and signature
- Photo tab: tap "Choose photo" and pick a recent colour photo with a white background.
- Drag or zoom so your face is centred in the 2.5 × 3.5 cm frame, then tap "Download JPG" (under 20 KB).
- Signature tab: sign on white paper, take a photo, and tap "Download JPG" (under 10 KB).
- Upload both on the PAN application page and check the preview box.
Common mistakes that get the form rejected
- Photo file above 20 KB or signature above 10 KB (phone photos are many MB).
- Black & white photo; the specification asks for colour.
- Photo in landscape shape. PAN needs a tall 3.5 × 2.5 cm photo, but a wide 2 × 4.5 cm signature.
- Signature that does not match the one on your other documents.
