The e-Aadhaar you download from UIDAI is a password-protected PDF. As per UIDAI's FAQ, the password is a combination of the first 4 letters of your name in CAPITAL letters and your year of birth in YYYY format.

Count the letters exactly as your name is printed on Aadhaar, in English. Spaces are skipped but dots are counted: SAI KUMAR becomes SAIK, and P. KUMAR becomes P.KU. Then add the four-digit year, for example 1990.

If your name has fewer than four letters, use the whole name in capitals followed by the year: UIDAI's own example is RIA, born 1990 → RIA1990.

Once the PDF opens, you can print the Aadhaar card at its real size (85.6 × 54 mm) with the front and back next to each other on A4 using the CropKaro card tool. It accepts the password and opens the PDF inside your browser only.

Step by step

1. Look at your name exactly as printed on Aadhaar (English).
2. Take its first 4 characters in CAPITAL letters (skip spaces, keep dots).
3. Add your year of birth in 4 digits, e.g. 1998.
4. Type it without spaces, for example RAHU1998, to open the PDF.
5. To print it card-size, open the Aadhaar card tool, choose the PDF and enter the same password.

Common password mistakes

• Typing small letters (rahu1998). The letters must be in CAPITALS.
• Using full date of birth (01011998) instead of only the year (1998).
• Counting the space in the name, or dropping the dot in names like P. KUMAR.
• Using the name in Hindi or a nickname instead of the English name printed on Aadhaar.
