UPSC's latest 'Instructions for uploading the photo & signature' apply to the common online application used for the Civil Services, NDA, CDS, CAPF, ESE and other exams. Three things are checked: a passport-size photograph, a live photograph and a triple signature.
The uploaded photograph must be a colour JPG between 20 KB and 200 KB saved with the file name 'photo'. The face must cover about 3/4th (75%) of the photo, with both ears visible, eyes open, natural expression, and a plain white background. UPSC shows sample photos that were rejected only because the face was too small in the frame, so use the zoom slider in the tool above until your face fills most of the frame. The instructions do not give a pixel size for the photo; the tool makes 413 × 531 px (3.5 × 4.5 cm at 300 DPI).
The live photograph is captured in the form and is matched with your uploaded photo. If they do not match, you cannot continue the application, so upload a recent photo that looks like you today.
For the signature, UPSC asks you to sign three times, one below the other, on plain white paper with black ink, scan all three in one image, and upload it as a JPG named 'signature' of 20–100 KB with image dimensions of 350–500 pixels. The tool makes a 400 × 500 px image and names the file signature.jpg for you.
How to resize your UPSC photo and signature
- Photo tab: tap "Choose photo", pick a recent colour photo with a white background, then zoom so your face fills about 3/4 of the frame.
- Tap "Download JPG". The file is saved as photo.jpg and its size is shown (between 20 and 200 KB).
- Triple signature tab: sign three times one below the other on white paper with a black pen, leaving a gap between them, and take a photo.
- Check that all three signatures are inside the frame, then tap "Download JPG" to get signature.jpg (20–100 KB).
- Upload both files in the UPSC form and capture the live photo in good light.
Common mistakes that get the form rejected
- Face too small in the photo (less than 3/4 coverage). This is the most common reason in UPSC's own rejected samples.
- Dark background, uniform, coloured glasses, hair over the eyes, or shadows on the face.
- Signing the photograph, or uploading an old photo that does not match your live photo.
- Only one signature instead of three, signatures side by side instead of one below the other, or lined/coloured paper.
- Wrong file name. UPSC asks for the files to be named 'photo' and 'signature'; the tool names them that way.
FAQ

The photograph must be a JPG between 20 KB and 200 KB, saved with the file name 'photo', with the face covering about 75% of the photo.
What is the UPSC triple signature size?
Three signatures one below the other in a single JPG of 20 KB to 100 KB, with image dimensions of 350 to 500 pixels, saved as 'signature'.

Mostly because the face covers less than 3/4 of the photo, the face is not straight, or the photo is blurred. Zoom in using the slider before downloading.
